You can't use a socket, there is not enough room. You will need a 24mm wrench, and open end may be better than box-end.
The drain plug is at the extreme bottom of transmission. The head of the bolt is thinner than standard and faces the engine. The case configuration will limit your access to the bolt - can only turn the bolt about 1/6 to 1/4 turn without moving wrench - but you will probably only need to move the wrench once before the bolt is finger loose.
If you look at the bottom surface of the transmission case, at the end mating to the engine, on the centerline of the crank, you will see a slight bump (1/2 the size of a ping-pong ball) cast into the case. Look at this bump from the engine side and you will see the thin 24mm drain plug.
