I first changed the ATF in my 9³ at 35k miles, & it was already starting to turn brown & burned at that point. I used the Havoline fluid at that time.
However, after several discussions on both this BB & the 9³ BB, I decided to start replacing the fluid every 10k miles ('cuz I'm getting less than 1/2 out each time) & using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF instead of the Havoline conventional fluid. Boy, was I glad I did! At the second change (only 8k miles after the first) the fluid didn't look any better than before. Now I'll simply change the ATF every 10k miles using Mobil 1, & I'll never worry about the fluid or the tranny's health again.
Also, it only costs $15-$20 every 10k miles to use 3+ qts of Mobil 1 ATF. I find this much less costly & wasteful than a $100 machine flush which uses 10-15 qts of conventional fluid. And with M1 ATF I'm getting better protection, too.
