...wife has the paddle shift Aero which she doesn't use. She asked me once about those strange buttons once and I told her just leave them be.

I am driving her car today as she usually takes the town jitney to the train station. So I paddled to work this morning :-)...

As everyone said, put the shifter in "M", then use the "+" or right paddle for upshift and "-" or left paddle for downshift.

What many didn't mention is that if you are in 3rd and you slow down or stop at a light, the transmission downshifts automatically for you even in "M". But you need to paddle back up from 1st when you start. I haven't had the chance to see if the thing would upshift before hitting the rev limiter if I don't, maybe someone else would post or I just try it when I go home today :-).

If I paddle, I just paddle up and let the transmission shift down for me. Yes, you do need to anticipate a shift due to a small delay, but no more so than the time we let the clutch in, shift, then clutch out, I think it is perfectly acceptable as an alternative.

Do I think I would paddle instead of just leaving it in "D", the short answer is no. "D" is perfectly fine, pushing the "S" button does more for me than "M". The paddles become a bit awkward to use when I have to down or up shift while turning, I think the Tiptronic (i.e. Audi/VW/Porsche) shifter has a better arrangement. Audi had the paddles in some of their Tiptronic equipped cars in certain model years (2001 ??) but got rid of them later on.
