I have an '03 Arc with paddle shifters, and it does upshift as it approaches redline (found out when I forgot to "flick").
I use the paddle shifters only when I want to pre-select and keep a lower gear, such as when preparing for a traffic move or keep revs up on a cloverleaf onramp merge. To use it as an aid during traffic moves requires a 2-step process with my hands: 1) shift to "M"anual 2) right hand back to steering wheel while left hand downshifts to desired gear. While not brain surgery, you have to plan these moves in advance (as opposed to shifter shifting i.e. BMW), making it less useful. The paddles are kinda fun in hard twisty driving, requiring/allowing you to keep 2 hands on the wheel (albeit 9&3, not 10&2). The delay is irritating, as you have to plan on the half second/~500 rpm delay. Its a surrogate manual operation, but 98% of the time I'm in auto mode. The "sport" mode does give great response, however. If auto wasn't a spousal requirement, I'd probably be in an Aero right now!
