The last V6 isn't that great and that I believe...

contributed to its demise. First, it is a turbo and the usual V6 crowd tend to shy away anything that says turbo (= unreliable) but the old I4 crowd think the contrary. So the 9-5 V6 joins the 9K/900 V6 as orphans amidst the I4 variants. I have been skeptical about the V6 in the beginning but hoping someone would turn the thing into a true twin turbo V6.
Saab MUST have a V6 in the family sedan solely for marketing alone if not for technical reasons. Otherwise, no one in this market segment would even look at a Saab as a near luxury family sedan. All Japanese manufactures knew this already, 4 cylinder sedans belong to the economy segment.
If Saab is going to compete in the usual up-market family sedan segment, a V6 and the AWD option are essential. I think Saab knows that but not sure GM wants to provide the money and determination to do that.
I can see the 9-5 getting another GM V6 later on. But this time probably just a normally aspirated engine with better power (250HP range). If Saab doesn't have money to put out a re-designed 9-5 soon, I surmise the new engine may start showing up in the end run of the current generation of 9-5. At least, Saab can test the new engine before a total re-design for the 9-5.
I think a 9-5 or a bigger luxury sedan with AWD using the slightly detuned Corvette engine would be an interesting combo. GM already has the engine and transmission from Cadillac/Chevrolet. This larger sedan should compete well in the popular A6/A8 range and certainly better than the current Volvo S60/S80 combo.
