generation. Come to think of it, I have never owned a non-hatchback. Yes, there are non-hatchbacks in our family garage but there is at least one hatchback. I am not sure I can find another big hatchback to replace my now aging 9000.
I am not sure Saab can survive financially staying as a niche car maker. The other prominent niche car maker that comes to mind is Porsche; but they are in a whole different playing field and they are going mainstream as well as with the Cayenne SUV and water-cooled engines. The odd thing is that Porsche's much despised front engine designs 928/944 would fit in just fine now but not 20 years ago.
So if Saab cannot stay as a niche car maker then it is trying to branch out. I have mixed feelings about rebadging other makes by Saab as well. I also agree that Saab is going into market segments that are already very crowded. Rebadging probably is the quickest and cheapest way for GM/Saab to go into these market segments. Guess we will see in a few years whether this strategy works.
As a car buyer, I tend to be brand neutral with minor bias toward non-German and non-Japanese. Somehow, Saab tends to make cars that fit our needs so we always end up with an all Saab garage. If someone puts a nice looking car body with good interior design on sound mechanicals of another make and then calls it a Saab. I have no problem buying such a car. It is the car itself I am buying not the Saab brand. If VW/Audi buys Saab and then rebadges an A6 as Saab 9-8, I would buy it as well :-).
