Lookit' that "S" car go........ Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 9-5 2000 2.3t "S" Mode, Steve, Sat, 1 Nov 2003 11:02:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Punchline from a joke about a snail who buys a car and paints an "S" on every side so that people remark........
Anyway selecting "S" every goshdarn time you put the car in drive, it won't stay in Sport, goshdarnit (is my frustration with that evident?), not only increases the rpm's at which the transmission upshifts, it does two other things.
As 9-5's have an electronic servo throttle, there's no mechanical linkage, so selecting sport amplifies the throttle linkage, that is makes more go or throttle for the same amount of gas pedal application. And sport also lowers the threshold for downshifts initiated by stabs of the throttle. You'll get a downshift with less throttle application in sport, when you stab the gas the transmission is much more eager to downshift.
Unlike some other manufacturers (older BMW's for instance), sport does not lock you out of top gear. That is on the freeway at cruising speeds you'll still be in top gear with the torque converter locked up and be getting the same fuel economy. There have been some interesting polls on this board about whether driving in sport gets you worse fuel economy.
