Paula: I had the Saab 16 inch package on my first 9-5 for 4 winters, and am now going into the second winter on my 2002 Aero,also with the 16 inch alloy package with the Gislaved snow tires. I can assure you this is the better route to go with this car. The 205/55/16 size is the right balance between the need for traction in the snow, and the fact that most of the time during the winter, you are likely to still be on dry pavement. Putting a tire on the car that is dramatically smaller than the summer tires that you are used to might come back to bite you. In addition, this is purely my opinion, but if I paid mid thirties for a premium luxury sport sedan,I dont really want cheap looking steel wheels on it. I had them on my previous 2 9000's, and every time I looked at them, they just stuck out like a sore thumb. The sidewall height of the 55 series tire on the 16 inch alloy wheel is fine for this region( I live in NH, and hit the ski trails weekly). If your dealer cannot supply the Saab package( they sell out every season) the TIre rack offers comparable packages with premium snow tires and alloy wheels in the 16 inch size. I think that with that combinaton, this car is as good as it gets in winter driving. Makes no difference between the V-6 and the four cylinder. BOth are great in snow with the right package.
