1. If you compare specs from the German made 0W-30 to all the other Syntec oils you will find only the 0W-30 meets the wide variety of mfr approvals. Here's the list for the 0w-30:
Official approvals:
SAE 0W-30
API SL/CF
ACEA A3/B3/B4
VW 502.00/505.00(1/97)
VW 503.01 (9/99)
BMW Longlife 01
MB 229.3
Nissan
Porsche
Rolls-Royce
2. Oil enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic have compared specs and approvals and have determined that this new 0W-30 is the same oil as the European market only Castrol Formula SLX.
Your experiences with Castrol, while unfortunate, have no real connection to the particular product we're talking about here. If you're happier with the M1, terrific. Stick with it as its a fine product.
AFAIK, this Castrol oil and M1 0W-40 are the only two oils readily available in N. America that meet the wide variety of mfr approvals listed above. Excepted from this list are oils available strictly from dealerships and various diesel oils. For those who want an alternative to Mobil One, Castrol 0W-30 is it.
