I understand better where you are coming from. And for someone who might be concerned about Castrol's honesty with their customers based on their track record, your comments are food for thought.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I have no beef, personal or otherwise, with ExxonMobil or their Mobil One product. I have no personal neuroses, no animosity, no emotional attachment to them in any way. It's just motor oil to me. I used M1 10W-30 for several OCI's in my 9-5, obtained one analysis from Blackstone/T Dyson (and posted it in the BITOG UOA forum), and decided to switch *only* out of curiousity.
I returned the 9-5 to my dealer at lease end and never got the chance to obtain a UOA on Syntec 0W-30. My current vehicle will be using Chevron Supreme as I do not feel the need to use a synthetic in it (2004 GMC Sierra). In short, my personal interest in these two products, and synthetic oil in general, is strictly a cerebral exercise. I have no axe to grind for or against any petrochemical company.
For people who are super-passionate about the oil they put into their engines, this discussion can go on and on and on. Most of the issues raised in this thread will never be answered. And even if they are, someone will not like the extent of the answer. I guess that's what keeps place like BITOG going; no one is ever completely happy with what they've learned or know.
After all this talk I still feel Castrol "German made" Syntec 0W-30 is a viable alternative to Mobil One 0W-40, and I'll continue to recommend to people until Castrol gives me a reason to stop recommending it. The rest I leave up to the readers of these posts to devise their own conclusions.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Eiron, and to everyone reading. Eat too much turkey, drink too much apple cider, watch too much football, and spend too much money buying Christmas gifts. Life is too damned short.
