If you can hear background hiss when listening to normal FM programming, then the S/N ratio might be an issue. I can't.
When a car is running, even at idle, the background noise level is pretty high. Most radio stations compress the heck out of the dynamic range of their audio so that you don't have to keep turning up the volume during the quiet passages and down during the loud ones to compensate for the background noise issue.
I rode with a Radio Shack sound level meter in my Saab one time and was shocked to find that I was listening to music at a 85-90 dB level. I had it turned up to where it was clearly audible enough to drown out the background noise (i.e. fairly loud) but my no means ghetto blasting. My neighbors would be calling the police if I played music that loudly at home, where a 75-80 dB level has about the same musical effect.
The bottom line is that you should definitely listen to the rf-modulated setup before purchase. The quality can vary. I once had an Alpine CD changer (which _was_ CD sound quality :-) added to a Lexus via rf-modulation with very satisfactory results. YMMV.
