XM and Sirius each use their own proprietary compression systems. Below is a link to an XM press release talking about how "wonderful" their system is. They discreetly say "near CD" in their description. I have read magazine articles doing in-home listening test of both XM and Sirius and they all say that it is easy to tell the difference to a real CD over audiophile quality equipment.
My last 3 or 4 Avis rental cars have been XM equipped. It was a novelty to play with and the sound quality was not that much different to the FM programming - at least on these Buick radios. It was nice to drive through the country side without having to hit the Scan button to keep finding stations in range. However, XM channel surfing was frustrating because it takes a few seconds to buffer the signal every time you change a channel. Also, the signal would drop completely if it was blocked - which could be by a tall building, an overpass and forget trying to listen in a parking deck!
