The auto tran used by Saab is one of the very best performing and most reliable.

As noted by others, a 4 cylinder is not as smooth as V6 or V8, but when completely warmed the engine should be relatively smoothed. My 9-5 will vibrate a bit on certain cold mornings, but not on all. An engine is most emissions challenged when cold, and an auto box also needs to reach a certain operating temp for optimal smoothness.

Now, the poster Shea suggests changing the plugs, worth a try. I've also recalled other posters experiencing pinging in the engine, which was only cured when the DI was replaced, despite the original DI giving no indications of failure. I've reviewed the writings on the ion measuring technologies, and there are references to variations in the ion current in seemingly identical operating circumstances. The sensing capability of the DI relies on proper gap, and hence the engine management system can be adversely impacted by improper plug gap or perhaps a small fault with the DI owing to an out of spec component or high resistance somewhere in the ion detection circuit paths.

The other possibilities could be small faults in other sensors such as the O2 sensors, not significant enough to trigger a CEL, or as another suggested dirty throttle body. But when fully warm it does not seem right for the engine to shake at idle, many of us with autos do not have that issue.

So I'd look at the engine management system, rather than auto box.
