Steering, rim damge opinions needed

okay, I did it. When I went to park at work in yesterday's grotty weather, from almost a standstill to get to the curb, the car twitched when I gave a little gas and in the soft snow I suddenly spun into the curb to the right.
No way out, cut the wheels hard left, and smacked the curb hard with the outside of the right front wheel.
Two questions for you gurus out there.
1)What's the likelihood of damaging my steering off this? I swear my steering wheel is more off center to the LEFT, but I am also a hypochondriac, and besides--that does not seem to make sense. The weather is so grotty that I can't yet get up to speed on a flat, non-crowned-to-the-right road to see how it handles. And I can't get a good look at my tracks. It looks okay, but you know how this stuff is. The next easy opportunity to get it looked at would be President's day. Last time I did this was in 1975 on a 1968 piece of garbage (aka basic Chevy Nova), and a rod was bent, but obviously that can't be the issue here. I could also see the damage then in the way the wheel pointed.
2)About 1/5 of the edge (edge only) of my wheel is nicely scarred (1999, basic 5 spoke)from scraping the curb. I recall when we got the car the dealer explaining the care needed in cleaning these wheels so as to not abrade the protective covering, which would then allow damge and rust. Anybody have any ideas as to how to keep the wheel protected? Tire looks fine, BTW.
Any ideas, info, comments appreciated. Thanks
