I've used the Saab hitches on a '74 99, and two 9000s. I'm sure that I've hauled 2000lbs on more than one occasion, and never had brakes on the trailer. I am always carefull when trailering, and give myself lots of extra stopping room, and keep the speed under 75mph. My sailboat is especially difficult as it is somewhat bulky and windage becomes a factor. Also need to remember to put at least 50lbs on the tongue or it starts wagging. Not heavy, just big.
Don't know what you are planning on towing, but if my experience with past models is any indications, you should not have a problem. The 4cyl engine is very much up to the work. Watch the turbo gauge to be sure you are not overworking the turbo. Never been a problem for me at cruising speed. Also my hitches have all been rated for 2000lbs.
