I generally use a hoist to launch my sailboat. But have in the past, and continue to launch occasionally from a ramp. Rear wheel drives tend to get into the water, have less weight over the wheels, and have a wetter area of the ramp to climb because of other boats being pulled out. I think front is far superior to rear wheel drive for pulling a boat out of the water.
4 wheel would be better yet, but I've never had problems with my Saabs. Don't know the variables of your launch sites, or weight of your boat, but would think if you are under 2000lbs, you should not have a problem at most good launch sites.
