The recommended, and hence Saab paid for, service intervals are 15K mi for the 2004 models. I talked to a factory rep and they say the combination of the fully syn oils plus a "new" oil filter make it adequate. BTW, the idea of changing the oil after the first 1000 mi or so during break in goes back to the days when non-detergent oils were used to seat the rings and did not hold up to any longer use. I'm planning on changing oil and regular inspections including tire rotations at 7.5K mi intervals so every other one, for a total of two, will be paid for by Saab, and I'll have the records for a safer and more purdent service schedule.
