I believe the manual states that the extended change interval is for 'normal' use but if you do 'extreme' driving you should change your oil at shorter intervals. The problem is 'extreme' driving is any driving which involves stop & go, urban traffic - which for most of us is normal.
Look at it this way, considering how much did you just paid for your new 9-5, are you now going to argue over a $40 oil change every couple months? I use Mobil1 and still change it every 5K. The last time I changed, I went 6.5K miles due to lazy scheduling on my behalf, but that's fine because it's fully syn. I've read many stories about sludge'd up engines because of these extended intervals.
