The job is much easier if you can get to the belt and the pulleys from underneath the car. In fact, I would say it is almost impossible to do it just from above.
So if you don't have ramps or a flat (or bottle) jack, you might not want to attempt it. However, you can get ramps and a jack from Sears for a *lot* less than one hour of a mechanic's time would cost. And he'd take 2-3 to do the job.
That is the way I justify my trips to Sears for tools ;-)
