Hi steve,
I've been using M1 15W-50 here in Northern Colorado for the past 17-1/2 months in my '90 N/A C900. The car has started fine down to 12°F with straight M1 (last winter), & down to 0°F with one qt of Saab 5W-30 semi-syn mixed in (this winter).
In the 9³ I've been running straight 0W-40 for the past 15 months. My original plan was to mix equal amounts of 15W-50 & 0W-40 for the 9³'s next 10k mile interval, but then Mobil came out with the 5W-40 & I've decided just to use that. I think the 50/50 mix would be the best combination for the winter if the 5W-40's not available in your area by then. I think the 15W-50 is the best grade to use in our Saab turbo engines, but my 10k mile intervals means I'm guaranteed the same oil thru both sub-zero winters & above-100°F summers.
I woudn't mix 15W-50 & 10W-30, only because you're losing more of what you want to keep (the 50 wt) & not getting enough of what you don't have (the xW- low end). I'm not sure you'll see any real difference in fuel economy between the various M1 grades. Keep in mind that the 0W-40 simply flows better when it's really, really cold. The rest of the time it's going to behave like any other premium, fully synthetic 40 wt.
And that $4+ price sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
