Saab Spokane's oil theory was what motivated my study of oil properties. I believed (and still do) that they are a little "over the top", but their main issue, observed bearing damage from inadequate oil, I took as essentially true.
Saab's recommended ACEA A3/B3 oil grade includes a specification for viscosity ***in the bearings*** (called HT/HS) which can be met by a very few 30 weight oils. No *conventional* oil meets ACEA A3/B3 specs - only synthetic and synthetic blend. We concluded that the most appropriate oil for turbocharged Saabs is ACEA A3/B3 fully synthetic oil - beyond that, it gets into the category of angels on pinheads - but note that 9-5s leave a quart of oil in the cooler, so it's a good idea to stick with one brand for a while.
