Walmart is usually the cheapest, but search for the closest Auto Barn, they're mostly on Long Island, with a branch in Queens; all viscosities of Mobil 1 (they don't have the new 5W-40 or 0W-30R) are currently on sale at $4.29/quart.
Based on my used oil analysis, I think so long as the oil carries the ACEA A3 rating, it's thick enough. I'm currently using German Castrol 0W-30 and it's working great. Engine is more revvable versus M1 0W-40.
If you go too thick you'll have more turbo lag. But if you frequently boost into the red, M1 15W-50 is not a bad idea. However, for the winter time you'll probably want M1 0W-40 for easier cold starting.
I'm going with M1 5W-40 (aka Delvac 1) this summer, a heavy-duty, severe service diesel-spec oil that's also approved for gasoline engines.
