just the basic stuff used to laminate paper, or maybe a sign shop has some tougher clear film. I'm sure it would stretch enough to mold around the edge and under the badge. Just need to be careful and not trap any bubbles as you lay it down.
Can't end up any worse, I'd imagine. Besides, 20 bucks is a cheap price to carry out experiments these days :-)
I replaced my fading one that was <2 years old, without that fix.
Frankly, I can't understand how something so visible in image terms could be allowed to be so prone to fail. Image = perception of quality = sales after all.
