fuel gauge stops working when car warms up

'99 9-5 2.3LPT, 98K miles, manual trans, production date 11/97
When I start the car in the morning, the fuel gauge measures the proper level. But as the car warms up, the gauge drops until it hits the bottom and the low fuel light comes on steadily.
Interestingly, the "Distance to Empty" shows a big 0, but the "Miles per Gallon" figure is accurate (around 30mpg - local driving/highways)!
I looked under the rear seat, under the cutout, and there are two big parts... the top of the fuel pump assembly (yellow), and a black plastic part mounted about four inches forward of the fuel pump assembly. The fuel pump has a four wire connector connecting to the center, and the other part has a three wire 90 degree connector. I'm assuming that the black part is the float/sender unit.
I've disconnected all the connectors and reseated them, to no avail.
Does anyone know what the three wires from the sender are (IOW, which is ground, which power, which the signal)?
Also, what ohms resistance range should the sender should be putting out?
Do the sender wires run up under the seat? Or in the heating duct? Perhaps there is a short in the heating duct that only happens when the heat comes on?
How does the sender unit come out? It seems like there is not enough clearance for it to come out (it is sandwiched into the area between the tank and the metal car body) without dropping the tank.
Thanks for any help on this!
