Thanks Dean, for your suggestions to my previous post.

When I disconnect the wires to the sender, the gauge remains at empty, even with the ignition turned on.

I checked the sender unit with the tank full and the sender measures 414 ohms resistance. That is consistent with the ~400 ohm measurement that it should be at. So it looks like the sender is okay.

Then I turned the ignition back on and measured the resistance of the two wires (gray/white, yellow white) leading to the front of the car and the instrument cluster. The measurement was 1400 ohms, and voltage 11.92 VDC.

So it sounds like there is a short somewhere in the wiring, or the gauge might be bad. The gauge itself costs $600, so I am hoping it is a simple short somewhere in the wiring as it runs under the seat.

Does this sound possible?
