For a leaseholder, this would be an excellent strategy. Depending on the length of the lease and the wear rate, you might even do well to put the new ones on the front when the fronts wear out, a practice generally frowned upon.
In the past, with the beam axle used on the C900 and 9000, there was a tendency for the rear tires to cup, and I've had one shed its belt long before it was worn out (50,000 miles). I don't think that applies to 9-5s.
One danger for low mileage drivers is the age of the tires. It's been said that 10 years is the maximum useful life, which you *could* exceed on the rears if you never rotate.
One other issue is what happens when you do wear out two tires. If you replace them in kind, it's *very unlikely* that the same tire will be available when the second pair needs replacing. So, you wind up with a mismatch. Or, you can replace the first worn out pair with something different, and have a mismatch right away. In either case, your choice is limited by having to replace two, not four tires.
Bottom line, it's more of an opinion than a hard rule, and one that would fit in some instances.
