-- Thanks for your thoughtful response, mdj :). Also, thanks to everyone else who took the time to answer me!
I have been checking 2001 inventory online and have noticed that manual transmissions are far and few between. I am resigned to the fact that if we buy a 2001, it will be an automatic. If I'm going to get an automatic, I might as well get a V6 SE.
We drove an 2004 automatic ARC wagon yesterday and 5-speed ARC and AERO sedans today. I thought the automatic was sluggish and not a whole lot better than our broken in 99 SE. We were unimpressed. Then, we drove the 5-speed ARC sedan. That's more like it! Quick, tight and responsive. A very nice car! I also drove the AERO and although it was a bit quicker, I didn't like the sports seats. Plus, we live in snow country and I already swap tires on my Celica. Yuck.
I asked the dealer to do locate for a 2004 9-5 ARC 5 speed. We're not in a huge hurry since one car has been working out OK for us the last week as we both work from home. I am still not 100% sure that we want a 2004. The cash flow would be OK if my Celica were not a 1995 and due to be replaced soon. Toyotas are tanks and my Celica has only had routine maintenance, but you just never know if a 9 year old car with 85K miles will last another 5 years. We could not afford payments on a 30K wagon and a 20K+ used 9-3 convertible at the same time, but might be able to swing 2 used cars if we needed to.
*sigh*
