The mpg increase is not unexpected--AMSOIL uses different chemistry, and some sort of exotic friction modifier, in the Series 2000 oils.
My son-in-law changed from AMSOIL 10W-30 to 0W-30 some years back, when the 0W-30 hit the market, and picked up 50-60 miles per tankful. Made the extra cost of the 0W-30 insignificant (especially since he helped himself to the oil from my garage).
Average increase in mpg, for those who keep track of such things, seems to be about 5%--as low as 3%, high as over 10%. Others just go faster quicker, and see no difference in fuel economy.
The 4 ball wear test is not a test used definitively for engine oils, but it is certainly not a bogus test. It is a good indicator of the ability of the oil to prevent/reduce wear under rather extreme loads.
