Unfortunately my 2000 9-5 Aero took a nasty hit to the rear from a Chevy Astro minivan going about 20mph. Good news is I'm ok, but obviously my car isn't. I don't have any pictures (yet), but the bumper and trunk absorbed most of the impact and are pretty much destroyed. At least one of the rear quarter panels is also kinked and the driver-side doors are now misaligned. It appears that the safety systems worked well. The rear crumple zone absorbed the impact with no intrusion into the passenger compartment, fuel leakage, or glass breakage. I didn't feel the active head restraint working, but I assume that it did. The driver's seat also moved back a few inches during the impact. I don't know if that is by design, in order to help soften the blow, or if it just slipped. If there was somebody with long legs in the rear seat, they might not have appreciated having the front seat move back into their space.

I am a bit concerned about the repair. If repaired, I want to make sure that the safety systems will perform the same in the future. I would prefer to see the car totaled, but I suspect that it won't since I think it is still mechanically intact and only has 25k miles. For lack of a better option, I sent it to the local dealer. Has anyone else had significant rear-end damage repaired? I would appreciate any tips or advice. If it makes any difference, this is going on my insurance since the dork who hit me was ulicensed and uninsured (and an illegal alien even). Thanks!
