Sorry to hear of your misfortune but glad you're OK, thanks much to the Saab no doubt. Those Astro vans have horrible crash ratings, so I hope the driver was OK. Of course he's uninsured, etc., etc. -- Murphy's Law!

My '02 Aero wagon was rear-ended at about 10 mph by a late-model-year Jetta. Adjuster said $1400 or so at first but the body shop brought it up to about $3800 after seeing more damage underneath around the spare tire area. No sheetmetal problems, though, and it didn't look that bad, but things were lurking underneath (including the need for a new exhaust system). Yours sounds considerably worse. The adjuster, in my case, was really just underestimating -- and sloppy. They said they'd heat the bumper cover to bring it back to shape. Sorry, guy, that doesn't work for me...nor did it work for the body shop.

A friend's Volvo wagon ('98 v90 - the last of the brick breed) was slammed twice recently from behind with similar kinds of damage you describe -- sheet metal, doors misaligned, seat moved -- estimate came to $9000 and that's without prying things apart. The roof was slightly bent too at one point. Certainly they would have found more after getting it up on a lift, but they instead totaled the car based on its market value. Find out your Aero's value as a starting point.

Good luck!
