I ran into a utility pole at 3-4 mph. The damage of course was to the front end of the car. Insurance adjuster said $9000, reputable body shop did it for that. Insurance paid, everybody happy.....not so fast....my insurance premium tripled: went from $4000/yr for 4 vehicles to $12000/yr for the same 4 vehicles and the same drivers. We shopped around and got it down to about $9000, but we're going to be paying these rates for at least 3 years. If I had had any inkling of the magnitude of the increase, I would have paid the 9k out of pocket and in less than two years we would have been on the up side of the transaction. The entire insurance industry is going bananas, it seems, not just the medical malpractice end of it.
