The bmw is a great car, but the Saab has taken this to another level. Much more roomy in back, ventilated seats, cavernous trunk, fwd, the list could go on, dash layout is straight from an airplane.
As for snows, I used to live in Wausau, WI, north of you. Knowing Chicago winters, I would go for snows simply for the piece of mind. Many Saab dealers will do a season-ending close-out on snow/wheel packages, or an early-bird special in the fall. Most use Gislavad or Nokian (both developed in snowy northern Eurpoe), and I would not hesitae in recommending either (I run Nokian's).
The Saab will be a GREAT vehicle, except for depreciation. Those of us (yes fellow Saaber's, you have convinced me!) who buy Saab's tend to not mind the depreciation, because we will keep the car for a long time.
Call Saab about the Aero academy, I think it applies to original owner.
You sound all but convinced. Go drive it again, and talk numbers. While the 5spd auto is great, I sometimes wish mine was a 5spd if this helps...
