I switched to M1 in a BMW at 130k miles and the front crank seal did indeed begin to wheep, so I replaced it.
Sometimes the varnish and sludge that has worked its way into sealing a marginal seal will be cleaned up with syn, so it starts to leak.
The old stories of early-formula syns shrinking the seals still seem to float around in certain quarters too, but that's history.
