OK, just a few hours ago I test drove a 9-3 against a 9-5 wagon. Now, both are used '01 for the 9-3, '00 for the 9-5. I've also driven NG900. And frankly, I'm comparing them to a 9000.
The 9-3 is a fine car. I found it a little tight in the shoulders. Not bad as a passenger, but noticeable as the driver. And I'm not a big guy. Even my wife noticed it, and she's 5'3" with an updraft. You also sit a bit higher in the 9-3, almost giving you the feeling that you're sitting on it, not in it. Major issue with the 9-3- the knee space for the driver is tight. It wasn't too bad for me, because I like to sit low, and keep my legs stretch out a bit. But my wife likes to sit a little closer, and she was whacking her knee on the bolster under the steering wheel anytime she went for the brake quickly.
The 9-5 feels a lot more like my 9000. It feels quite wide in the shoulders. You sit lower. The 9-5 is about 4" longer (again, the wagon), but it doesn't really feel it. The difference is in the width. It's a NG900 to 9000 difference - the 900/9-3 sits more upright. It feels more tossable, and you feel a little more roll, mostly because you're sitting higher. The 9-5/9000 feels wider, so it doesn't toss as well - more of a luxo feel.
I haven't driven them, but I'll bet a 9-5 Aero would feel pretty good, handle well, but be smoother than the 9-3. A 9-3 would feel a little more hard-edged, more sporty. It all depends on what you feel is best.
The hatch on the 9-3 has decent access. I find the trunk on the 9-5 sedan to be fine, just a little hard to access. The 9-5 wagon has great access.
