'99 9-5 - Replace engine or fix?

Folks,
After a hard haul across kansas headed west, my 4cyl 9-5 blew a piston in the foothills of colorado a week ago. I saw the chunks myself in the oilpan. Not pretty. The car is currently at a reputable Saab shop in Denver. I am currently planning to sell the car to the shop for $1800, call it a wash, and move on. The car just turned 100,000 miles. The shop has offered to replace the engine for me for $3800 installed.
I have some questions:
1. What would you do? Fix or sell?
2. Do you think the engine can be fixed w/o replacing?
3. If i let the shop replace it, should I spring for the 6 cyl? Will it fit? How about a more powerful motor from a more recent model?
4. If you saw a '99 Saab 9-5 on EBay with 100K on the chassis, 40K on the engine, what would you bid? The car is beautiful dark blue, auto tranny.
Your thoughts would be most appreciated.
-greg.
