Yeah, I was stranded twice on the highway when the ignition blew and once the brakes totally failed when the master cylinder ruptured. Oh, wait, those were in my Civic and Accord, respectively. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Lessee, _constructive_ answer: In this case, I've never read about a pump shorting that way. You may look towards the headlamp wipers as they only work when the wash is on. They have a thermal-overload mechanism, but if you whack the stalk hard enough (I've lost more than one to high SUV bumpers) you can displace most of the internal components. Still never heard of that causing a short, either. Only close this: in the NG (dunno if the 9-5 shares the same fuse assignments), the reverse light switch was on the same circuit, and when it dies, it went to short and blew out the wipers when you shifted into R.

As for the fuel, if it was just a pump, I'd say it's bad luck, but lines, too? Dunno what the mechanic said but when it gets into replacing lines, that's classic bad gas. One bad tank can haunt you for tens of thousands of miles with poor starting, poor running, stalling, and all intermittent. My father-in-law's Accord (not my brake-less Accord) was this way. They did everything for poor starting/running/etc., and eventually he just got another Accord that wasn't suffering. (The indie was top rate, he really worked that car from every angle, to no avail.)

Somebody posted a very lucid rant (here or in General, last couple of days) about documented cases where Shell sold gas that ate out people's fuel systems.

Good luck
