The place I went to look at the used 9-5 Aero was unbelievable. I went there with all intentions of being interested to buy. I have the money to buy a new one outright. I got to the place of business, took a good look over the car (it WAS immaculate) and then asked for a test drive. The seller (a business, not a private owner) refused until "you're ready to sign the check." I reasoned with him that I had never driven one of these cars and that simply sitting in one would by no means convince me to purchase or even take the checkbook out of my pocket for that matter. He flatly refused, said he didn't "want to get the car dirty." I was incensed to say the least.
Then I asked (at the very least) to see the service records (he had flashed them to me, but I had not examined them). He then again refused on the grounds that "these have the previous owners name and phone number on them and he's dead." He had told me that the car was bought from an estate sale and I really wondered why he put this so bluntly. I then asked him to read the details to me - which he did - the car had a new water pump, a DI unit and a throttle body replaced, as well as relays for a number of the bells and whistles. If he knew this ahead of time, why not tell me - that indicates to me that many of the components on the car were nearly new! I left, thanked him for his time and asked directions to the local SAAB dealership (Gary Small Saab in Portland, OR), who I believe advertises on this site.
Then my luck changed...I met with a sales rep at the dealer, was treated very genuinely, got to test drive three 9-5's including an Aero, a test drive in a 9-2x Aero w/ chip & exhaust producing 300hp (whoah!) and then a drive in a 9-3 Vector that I have fallen in love with. More info to come, the 9-3 is very nice but I don't want to say anything to jinx my prospects!
Thanks again for your help. The 9-5 Aero seemed a little big for my tastes, and I was wrestling with my knees vs. the dash in most configurations of the seat - I'm fairly long legged, and the 9-3 just seemed to fit me a lot better.
Questions, etc to be continued on the 9-3 forum! It sure is nice to think that I might be driving a Saab again in my near future - as my vintage Saab project is just beginning!
I really do hope I end up with this car, and additionally that I may give the contact information of the other seller to the gentleman who was so helpful at the dealership so that he can be properly thanked for referring me to do business elsewhere.
