Even though you may be out of factory warranty, there may be an emmissions warranty in place that might cover the problem with the CEL, check engine light. The ECU that triggers the CEL is an emissions part. Safety systems are often treated more leniently than other items as to warranty terms, seatbelts are one example.
Ask your service advisor for the number for consumer complaints and open a case. Ask your service advisor to contact the district service rep and make him aware and if there is any good will availible, that is will Saab pick up part or all of the tab. Your case is bolstered if you're the original owner and have a good service history.
Nothing against dealers, I'm a Saab dealer myself but in sales, but after the warranty has expired you might save a ton of dough at an independent. Many have Tech II diagnostic tool which I'm sure is essential in diagnosing and repairing any thing that produces a fault code.
And 95% of electrical problems are bad grounds. Make sure the service department has inspected all the applicable and even non applicable grounds. Those killowatties do strange things when they can find their way home to ground.
