If I'm not mistaken, I think what Tom meant by hard wired is my definition of an FM Modulator. Basically, your RCA outs from the mp3 changer or sat radio gets fed to a unit which in turn goes to your antenna line. It's more or less a RCA > Antenna converter. You tune to a certain station like 88.3 or whatever is signal free in your area and what you've set on the modulator.
For example: http://www.sjgreatdeals.com/powefm100.html POWER ACOUSTIK EFM-100
I think there are other types of FM Modulation like drive-in theatres use. Just tune to a station and it's broadcast over the air that way. That's more of a FM Transmitter as opposed to modulator.
For example: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itrip/ FM Transmitter for the iPod - 'iTrip'
I would definately go with a hard wired solution for a piece of equipment that's mounted in the car.
Tom,
Please feel free to comment on this if this is not what you meant by hard-wired as I'd love to hear about another solution because I'm hesitant about installing this.
Regards!
