I expect that most of what happened was the response to the low octane fuels available in high altitude regions. A NA engine does not need high octane under those conditions, but a turbo engine boosting to compensate* for thin air will suffer, and that higher level of boost effort raises intake temps and increases exhaust manifold pressures and residual hot gasses in the combuston chamber, so octane requirements actually increase and low octane fuel will not allow the engine to perform well. The engine might be running richer to compensate which might darken the plugs on sustained boost. Plugs might be hotter too which could increase octane needs and also might make the DI knock sensing a bit over sensitive too. Hard to know exactly what all is going on.
* boosting to absolute pressure or absolute air mass flow targets
