I suspect it is a combination of octane and temperature. My boost with a stage 1 upgrade was a couple needle widths into the red this spring in cool Seattle weather. It was just ticking the red in July in Seattle (92 octane) and was a tad lower in So. Cal. in 100 degree heat with 91 octane fuel. This last weekend though (still So. Cal) when the temps got down to 60, I was back into the red, not quite as high as spring in Seattle but much better than it was in August. (I was out resetting the ECU at about 3000 ft. elev. after a battery replacement.)
One of the things that could have effected you is that it takes only one full throttle run for the ECU to reset itself for worse conditons (octane or temperature) and a couple of days for it to adapt back to better conditions unless you force it. So when you went from the heat to the cooler mountains, it was slowly adapting to the cooler temperatures but not fast enough to get you back where you were before you got home.
If you have a manual transmission, you can reset the ECU (according to BSR who supplied my ECU upgrade) with 4 full throttle runs from 2000 to 4500 RMP in 4th gear (if the wife will allow, that is). With an auto box, they recommend you wait it out, but the more you are on the throttle the sooner it was adapt.
