3M clear protective film is applied to the entire nose of the car. Its permanant(at least 5-6 years), and works great!, I had it on my previous car too, and would never not get it again for any new car I buy. Its pretty much bullit proof and you really have to look closely to pick up the lines where the tape ends. Find a shop that installs it, better yet ask your dealer who does it for their new cars and get it done through the dealer. Its not cheap however, expect to pay anywhere from 450-600 for the hood, bumper and mirrors. The cost pales in comparison to a repaint, and a repaint is never as good as the factory, no matter how good the paint shop is. One huge benefit over the hood protector is that the entire nose is protected, especially down low where most of blasting from sand occurs. My previous car looked brand new after 3 years compared to a similar age car, which looked as good but with the notable exception of the stone chips and sandblasting.
