Louis,
you certainly make some good points.
Certainly, there are enough parts on a car that may fail that have nothing to due with the lucbrication system, that will cause destruction of the engine. The timing belt on the V6 comes to mind. I know there are others.
There have been some posts of engines that have failed due to sludge.
I suspect that when a car has 250,000 miles, if the engine oil was well maintained (and by inference, the engine too), the engine may only be at 250,00 miles. If it was maintained with a poor quality oil, it may behave like it has 350,000 miles or put a different way, it may run like 250,000 miles when your car only has 100,000 miles.
Oil maintenance is cheap insurance, easy insurance. The parts of an engine that fail due to poor oil maintenance are expensive to repair, i.e. bearing, cams, turbo, etc and are all internal usually requiring a major overhaul.
I think people are passionate when they feel strongly about a certain subject. I agree that 5,000 may be a good number. But what if your 5,000 took 10 months because it was all "stuck in traffic" miles. Might be the equivalent of 10,000.
At any rate, you make some good points and I'm not trying to pick on you. I'm sure we will see some dissenting opinions.
