I understand that when these issues are raised with technical details to back them up that the differences in people's experiences with different products and change intervals might make a small difference, but like you noted, the main point I wanted to make is that the life of the car/engine just does not revolve around the brand/type of you oil,and or filter combination. Like you mentioned, driving conditions vary amongst drivers and even within one driver, they can vary with mileage.tempperature etc. My 5000 mile interval changes typically go about 2 months based on my miles driven, but being a fairly careful driver, and also being used to carefully nursing an aircaraft engine, my start up and shut down habits, rate of throttle application and monitoring of temps is perhaps a bit on the conservative side. I had to think a while about going from my prior 3000 mile interval to the current 5K rate, but felt comfortable enough with either semi or full synthetic to do that. I will say though that a lot of what we practice is based on doing things the way we are accustomed to. within GM, they have been playing with engines that will have a lifetime oil fill! Not read for prime time yet, but this is the direction that things are going. Don't be surprised if this happens. Over 25 years ago an old friend of mine had a company that was making racing engines and internal parts made of plastic and some ceramics. Engines might not be made of metal in the long term, and heck, they might not even be conventional engines at all. Look how hybrids have opened up thinking on how to move a car down the road.
