What is your driving style and oil change for the last 31K miles?
31K in 1 1/2 year is up there so you must drive quite a bit per start up of engine. Have you done 3, 6 or 10 oil changes? What oil did you use?
One thing that I do with ALL cars now is to do hot oil changes.
Either take car in right away when the customer show up or drive the car so that it gets hot before draining the oil.
Don't know if it makes a huge difference but I feel better when I see the hot oil pouring out, maybe dragging some particles with it compared to when you drain the oil on a cold engine having to "sweet talk" the oil out through the drain hole.
What I'm getting at is that it seems to be difficult to reverse the bad thing that the car encountered early on with starting to do regular oil changes later in life.
When the oil sludge has started to build up it is a one way to destruction.
One thing that I think plays a role in this scenario is the fine mesh on oil pickup tube.
On the older Saabs that you had you could "drive a truck" through the holes in the pickup tube and if any oil sludge particles ever would start to form, they would get sucked up, grinded to pulp through the pump gear and then spat out in the oil filter, end of story.
The fine mesh on todays cars (both Saab and Volvo) doesn't allow anything else then pure oil to pass through and each and every chip, speck of oil sludge gets stuck and slowly starving the engine of oil, raising the overall temperature of the oil.
You can always try to talk to Saab but I doubt they listen, they don't listen to people when this happens during the regular warranty period.
I would suggest to find a good used engine to install. It is plenty of them out there and if they removed the oil pan before installing it, they know right away if it is a good or bad one.
