I agree that loosening up sludge can make things worse.
So I suggest that the timing cover be removed and things can be inspeced that way. You should do this as part of a head bolt retorque, assuming that you have not done that before. If things look clean, you are good to go. Discoloration is normal, any thickness of varnish or goo is not.
Engine flushes do have great merit for simple cases of sticky rings or valves, but as pointed out, not for an engine that is growing plastic. It is when the plastic comes loose that the failure occurs. So in that case, the damage has already ocurred, but the effects are time delayed. I guess it is like bad arteries. Deposits in your arteries are not good, but when they shed bits into circulation, that can be fatal.
