I spent the extra money on the Aero (5-speed), and it was money very well-spent--the suspension's much more to my liking, and at the time, the braking upgrade were the two things worth the extra bucks. Now, I'd seriously consider the Arc.
The car's been extremely reliable. It's never left me stranded, and the handful of warranty issues were cheerfully and competently covered the first time around. The one DI cassette failure was not one that stranded me by the side of the road (at 30k miles)and was covered by warranty.
Maintenance has been very straightforward, as Dean eloquently noted. I drive a LOT of miles (30-40,000/year), and never tire of driving it (good thing). It's still a very tight car past 100k miles. Mileage is very good and far better than my girlfriend's '01 4Runner (nice truck, though). I find the 9-5 more comfortable to spend lots of time in, due to better seats and seating position. I've not tried the latest version, and I'm sure it's light-years ahead of the older ones... still, I'd give the Saab the nod.
