I have a 9-5 and I just picked up a Lexus ES330 for my wife. Give me a break. I can tell from experiencing this first hand that getting that Lexus was the most incredible experience I ever had. First of all the dealer network is second to none. The follow up work by them was second to none. More importantly the car itself is a pleasure to drive. Yes, it is completely different than my Saab, which I very much enjoy. But the finish of the lexus is impeccable. My Saab experiences have been the opposite. The Lexus might be an appliance and somewhat of a a quiet cruiser. But no rattles (second Lexus!) or problems. By the way, when you take you car for service they give you another Lexus instead of an Enterprise Malibu with 30,000 miles.
I have learned a lot about Mercedes, BMW, AUdi, and Saab. Great cars, but completely unrealible and expensive to fix. A pleasure to drive but expensive to fix. The japanese cars might not be as pretigious but they are extremely reliable. I think the two vehicles he is comapring are completely different. An SUV vs a Station Wagon. He can only answer that question. If he wants reliability, I would bet on the Toyota based on history.
