Like computers, every year brings better and better stuff. The '02 is an upgrade over the '01, and the '01 was a pretty major upgrade over the '00. Of course, given that logic, you should be getting a new '05 - really low mileage, and all the goodies. Oh yeah, the price. Sorry.
The step from '00 to '01 was pretty major. I don't know that there are any major 'fixes' for reliability from one year to the next, at least by '01. The V6 in the SE and the I4 in the other cars are pretty similar in reliability - slight advantages for one or the other depending on what area you're talking, but overall, pretty similar. What matters most is maintenance, no matter what's under the hood. Solid maintenance records, with regular, frequent oil changes are CRITICAL. No maintenace records, or spotty ones, and walk away. Period.
The advantage of the SE is that they came through pretty well loaded. Nice goodies. Slightly lower gas mileage than the four cylinder, but if you buy an Aero and drive it like an Aero, you'll get lower gas mileage anyway.
When I was looking at wagons last summer, the '01's were the best deal - '00s were getting long in the tooth, and less stuff. '02's were thin on the ground and very pricey. I would think '02s are starting to show up now, and that will actually depress the price of '01's a bit, making them a better deal.
Last summer, an '01 wagon still under warranty (<50K miles), with CPO, was list for about $21K even. A quick scan of the Certified cars on the Saab USA website (http://www2.saabusa.com/certified/search.asp) shows plenty of CPO cars in the $19K-21K range today. With bargaining, probably a little less. So I'd assume that $18K is a CPO car.
