winter tires would probably do better in sticky situations.
Wife's 9-5 Aero has winter tires (the usual Nokia Hak... 2 something winter tire package from Saab when we bought the car). It's a great car in snow, better than my 9000 Aero with the Pirelli Nero no season M+S tires.
Where are in NJ ? To the north, west or the north west corner of NJ somewhere where you may get as much snow as NY Westchester 8-). Don't tell me you end up in Easton, Clinton or right next to the PA/NJ state line 8-).
Well traction control doesn't help if you don't have traction with the tires to start with. I presume your Passat has four season tires.
The problem with a front drive car in snow is when you have to go uphill. I live near the bottom of a small hill probably with an incline similar to your driveway with a steep slope. Next time, back your Passat up instead of head first. This is a common trick I use when I have problem going uphill in snow/ice. When you head uphill with a FWD car, the weight shifts to the rear (due to the slope) that reduces the weight on the drive wheel and when you try to step on the gas, the weight transfer due to the frontwheel is toward the rear as well. So the two effects put less weight on the front when you go up hill than on level roads. You actually want a RWD car to go up hill, hey, how about a BMW 8-).
As we are expecting a ton of snow today and tomorrow, try it with the Passat after a few inches, say 3"-4", of snow and see how that work for you 8-). If this trick works fine, a 9-5 with winter tires would have no problem.
That said, the Allroad 4.2 looks pretty good to me 8-).
As for this weekend, not looking forward to clearing out the driveway...
